Largeince the invention of the firearm, there has been no truly quick or effective solution to the problem of rusting and barrel pitting. Instead, soldiers are often injured or killed by bore prematures at the range or in action, resulting in serious damage to national security, military readiness and property.
Commanders have failed to come up with an effective response so far. Apart from blaming poor weapon maintenance and cleaning by their men, no better method for effectively dealing with the problem has emerged. The standard method, running a cotton cloth and gun cleaning oil through the barrel, often takes 2 to 4 hours (including time for slacking off).
If oxidization has occurred in the barrel rifling, there is still no way to quickly and effectively remove the fouling. Over time, rust builds up, preventing the bullet from passing through the barrel. The reduced bore diameter causes a blockage and results in barrel bursting. Pitting in the chamber will cause jamming, failure to extract and in serious cases, the breech may fail to close correctly leading to misfire or bore premature. If the barrel pitting is particularly severe, the rifling may be interrupted, leading to a squib round (bullet stuck in the barrel), affect the ballistics and shooting accuracy, or even bore premature (barrel bursting). All of these represent a serious risk to the shooter.
